JPMorgan Chase announced their intentions to tear down their existing 52-story headquarters in Manhattan, New York City early last year.  When the demolition is complete, it is widely believed that it will be the tallest building ever to be voluntarily demolished. It’s speculated that the building will be dismantled floor-by-floor, as opposed to imploded, due to obvious safety concerns.

On January 15, 2019, a demolition permit was designed for the existing 707 foot tall building, which sits at 270 Park Avenue. According to City Realty, full demolition work is scheduled to begin early this year, but no specific date has been set.  There has already been a construction elevator installed on the exterior of the building, however.

One interesting fact that I learned from City Realty’s article is that the existing building, which was completed in 1961, actually held the record for the tallest building designed by a woman, a record that stood for almost 50 years.  The record holder, Natalie de Blois, worked for Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill and was one of a very small handful of female senior architects at that time.
