As part of Autodesk’s late 2018 construction technology acquisition spree, the software giant gobbled up both PlanGrid and BuildingConnected. The two acquired companies now form a large part of Autodesk’s Construction Solutions branch – and are now integrated with each other for a seamless document transition from the pre-construction phase to the construction phase.
BuildingConnected specializes in the pre-construction phase and bidding process by managing bidding documents, bid solicitation, and bidder qualifications within the same application. After the bid is awarded, however, it’s critical that all of the correct bid documents make it to the field to be properly constructed. In the past, that process could prove tedious for PlanGrid users as the documents are manually transferred from one platform to another.
With Autodesk’s recent announcement, data from BuildingConnected will now automatically transfer to PlanGrid, possibly saving project managers time and money, as well as increasing accuracy.
BuildingConnected will now feature a “push to PlanGrid” button, allowing PMs to create PlanGrid projects and all of the pre-construction project files will be immediately available to the field staff.
“The construction industry has struggled with transferring information from one project to another, and across the different phases of a building project. It's easy to feel insecure about the logistics of kicking off a job when the right tools to facilitate workflows don’t exist,” said Dustin DeVan, vice president, preconstruction products at Autodesk, in a press release. “By reducing errors and the need for rework, this integration will help to mitigate overall project risk and help to ensure more predictable outcomes. Project managers can now feel more confident as they transition from precon to site construction.”
This integration is certainly a value add for contractors already using the two products. Autodesk has also released several other product integrations after the acquisitions, highlighted by the creation of PlanGrid BIM, which is the integration of PlanGrid and Autodesk’s Revit.
